EYE patches, bandanas and swords are not part of the usual school uniform at Rawcliffe Bridge Primary.

But this has been no ordinary term as youngsters have been donning their best swashbuckling costumes as part of a project to learn about pirates.

Each child, from reception class to year six, was encouraged to take part in a Pirate Day on September 7, which included a number of games, activities and a fashion show.

They also took part in a scavenger hunt around school grounds to find buried treasure in the tasty form of gold chocolate coins.

Staff got into the spirit of things with many sporting Jack Sparrow-style head scarves, flowing shirts and large buckled belts.

The pirate theme continued last week when educators from Jolly Good Workshops visited school to give a puppet show and tell pupils about the history of pirates.

Headteacher Hilary Leach said: “We thought this would be a fun and engaging way to learn about pirates and all the pupils really got into the spirit of it.

“Our pupils have been making their pirate costumes over the summer holidays and they were excited to show everyone what they had made. The designs looked really good.”
