ACTION GROUP PLANS PROTEST

A MARCH opposing the controversial replacement for Conisbrough's Northcliffe School will be held on the eve of public consultations.

A series of public consultations has been announced into plans to replace Conisbrough's Northcliffe school with a 25 million academy.

A community opposition group, Conisbrough and Denaby Parents Action Group has organised a march against the proposals on June 19 starting at noon from Northcliffe School.

Protestors concerned about the potential Christian ethos of the academy have organised marches and demonstrations in opposition.

Local elections have meant Doncaster Council has so far been unable to put the case for the academy - backed by the Christian business magnate Reg Vardy - which seems to have split a community down the middle.

Those in favour of the academy say new facilities will give the town a boost and the religious aspect has been overplayed.

Now Doncaster Council has announced official meetings to give parents teachers and pupils their say.

An initial round of consultation will begin in mid-June with Doncaster Council's Cabinet making a decision on July 28. Parents of pupils at the school have already been sent an explanatory letter and a question and answer sheet regarding the proposals.

The public consultation meetings are open to all pupils, parents/guardians, school staff and the local community. Separate consultation meetings will also be held for parents, staff and pupils at Northcliffe School,

The meetings will be held on the following dates:

June 24: Northcliffe School; Staff 3.45pm, Northcliffe governors 5.15pm, Northcliffe parents 7pm

July 2: Ivanhoe Centre; Primary School governors 4.15pm, public consultation meeting 5.30pm

July 6: Northcliffe School; pupils 2pm,

July 12: Denaby Main Primary School; Primary School governors 4.30pm, public consultation meeting 6.30pm.
