UP TO to 1,000 jobs will be created in Barnsley by fashion retailer ASOS.
The company has revealed plans to open a distribution centre the size of 70 football pitches in the town by next summer.
The 40 million centre will have 360 permanent staff, boosted by up to 1,000 employees over busy periods, such as Christmas, when it will take on temporary workers.
And the Internet retailer says its new 530,000 sq ft centre on the former Houghton Main Colliery site will help it to become a 1bn business over five years.
ASOS operates online only and has no stores - yet it has flourished throughout the recession, and its magazine circulation is now 450,000.
Barnsley Council leader Steve Houghton said the investment will make a huge difference, and all efforts will be made to help local people secure jobs.
