A £5,000 reward is being offered by Crimestoppers for information leading to the arrest of an on-the-run murder suspect - believed to be holed up in Rotherham.

John Heald, aged 53, from Rotherham, is wanted for questioning by police over the murder of a B&B landlady in Bridlington last Friday.

Detectives investigating the death of Bei Carter, who was stabbed, believe their suspect may have travelled back to his home town.

They are concentrating their search around Mexborough, Wath-upon-Dearne, Rawmarsh and Swinton, where there have been a number of possible sightings.

Heald is also wanted by police in connection with a serious offence in Sheffield on Sunday, July 13.

More than 150 officers, including armed police are involved in the manhunt.

District Commander for Rotherham, Chief Superintendent Jason Harwin, said: “We would like to thank the public for their continued support and for contacting us with information.

“We need that information to keep coming to us so we can find John Heald as soon as possible.

“It is imperative if you see him, or someone you think is him, that you do not approach him but contact police immediately on 999.

“I would like to reassure members of the community that we are doing everything in our power to locate this man.”

Heald is 5ft 11ins tall, slim , with blue eyes and short, mousey brown hair. His right ear is pierced and he has tattoos on his hands and arms.

He has dots tattooed on the knuckles of both hands as well as a horse on his left hand and a mermaid and an eagle on his right arm.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Baldwin, from Humberside Police, who is leading the murder investigation, said: “We are working closely with South Yorkshire Police in the search for John Heald whilst at the same time actively pursuing the murder investigation.

“We have a team of dedicated officers who are working relentlessly to ensure all necessary enquiries are undertaken.

“The impact on the family of Bei Carter is massive and they are understandably struggling to come to terms with what has happened. The family is shocked and outraged by this unbelievable event and we have pledged to them that we are committed to ensuring we locate John Heald at the earliest opportunity.

“Both the family and the public should be reassured that no stone will be left unturned in the search for this man and collection of evidence in connection with the murder of Bei Carter.”

Anyone who spots the suspect should dial 999 immediately.
