A project to build a distribution centre, supermarket and housing which could create more than 500 jobs has received public backing.
The scheme involves building an Aldi store and 28 homes on land at Barnsley Road in Highgate.
The store is expected to create up to 48 jobs, while work has already started to build a distribution centre for the supermarket-chain on Commercial Road, Goldthorpe, which could create as many as 400 jobs.
Proposals were laid out for residents to view in the village earlier this month and received a positive response.
The company also sent out letters to 1, 800 households and received more than 100 responses, 95 per cent of which were in favour.
The firm will now submit a planning application for the supermarket and residential development in the next few weeks.
Mark Taylor, property director at Aldi, said: “The response to our consultation has been extremely positive.”
Dearne South councillor Ralph Sixsmith also welcomed the development plans.
He said: “This will provide a huge jobs boost for the area, which is much needed in these economic times. The company has been open about their plans right from day one and they are delivering on their promises. Hopefully the supermarket will be open by next Spring.”
