Pupils from Kilnhurst St Thomas C of E Primary School learned about local history when they were taken on tours of Kilnhurst Church and the graveyard, by Swinton councillor Ken Wyatt and local historian Giles Brearley.

The pupils, aged seven to nine, are producing a project which will be displayed at their summer fair in July.

They took part in a series of seminars about the history of the Swinton area, learning about the old pottery industry and the steel company Bakers and Bessemers.

Coun Wyatt told the Times: “It is nice to see youngsters taking an interest in the rich heritage of their village and we were only too pleased to help.” Giles and Ken have written several books on the subject and helped pupils with old pictures of the village.
