Jobs boost as closed supermarket site to re-open

A vacant supermarket in Mexborough is to re-open next month with the promise of more than 20 new jobs.

The vacant former Co-op store at the corner of Main Street and Orchard Street has been taken over by The Original Factory Shop.

The store will be launched on April 6 and is set to create more than 20 jobs. James Wilmot, an area manager for the company, said: “This is great news for Mexborough and is a real boost for the town.

“We want to become a community store and we want to employ local people.

“In times like this any news of recruitment can only be a good thing.

“It is on a nice plot in the middle of town and we expect there to be a lot of footfall coming through the doors.”

The Original Factory Shop has more than 180 stores across the UK.

It sells a range of goods including clothing, electrical goods, household goods and toys.

The store will also be looking at choosing a charity to support.

Mr Wilmot said: “We try and raise £1,000 per store, per year and we want to do the same in Mexborough.

“We will be asking for any nominations for worthy causes and then choose one to support.” The Co-op store closed in November last year with the loss of 35 jobs.
