A Big Band that fought to keep afloat since the death of its founder, the late Holin Hammerton, has an international star as supporter.
After losing Mr Hammerton three years ago, members of the 30-years old Dearne Big Band were determined to keep it going in his memory.
And on Sunday the band will be joined by jazz and big band singer Colin Anthony, for a special concert at Ardsley House, Barnsley.
Mr Anthony’s career has included fronting his own band, performing with the Beatles, the BBC Radio Big Band and Orchestras, and with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra. He currently plays with the Glenn Miller Orchestra UK.
Sunday’s concert will help finance the Dearne Big Band and Barnsley Youth Jazz Orchestra, and its tuition programme that includes musical ‘starter packs’ for youngsters in local schools.
Joint musical director Loraine Cawood said: “We are tremendously proud we have managed to keep our heads above water and continue to deliver on our ethos of providing music for all in the community.” Tickets for the 8pm concert are £5 on the door. Call 07519 593 091.
