SECRETIVE Doncaster Council is refusing to give its residents the low-down on under-age drinking… hiding behind the bizarre excuse that it is a PUBLIC body!

The authority has REFUSED to comply with a Freedom of Information request from this newspaper, to disclose the past two years’ history of its Test Purchase “sting” operations – in which it uses under-age youths as stooges to try to buy alcohol.

It revealed that Mexborough area pubs and off-licences have failed a total of 13 “sting” tests in the past two years.

But the council won’t say which!

The Times’ request for the names has been backed by pub giant Wetherspoon.

Their pub The Old Market Hall is on the verge of closure after under-age teenagers, sent by the council’s Trading Standards officers and police, successfully bought alcohol there three times last year.
