Isle bike to work project under starter’s orders

ISLE MP Andrew Percy joined councillors to get on their bikes to launch a riding to work scheme in Epworth.
Mr Percy, along with councillors Rob Waltham, David Robinson and Liz Redfern, were in town to promote North Lincolnshire Council’s Wheels 2 Work project.
The initiative involves hiring out ten Piaggio Zip scooters and providing 20 bicycles for people who have no suitable means of transport to get to work, college or training.
The MP encouraged people to join the scheme and said: “This is a fantastic scheme that will help people across the Isle get back into and get to work.
“I pay tribute to the council for working so hard to come up with such an innovative scheme.”
A scooter will cost an initial deposit of £40 - and then a monthly fee of £60. A bicycle will cost a one off £30.
People aged 16 and over can apply for a scooter and must have a full or provisional driving licence.
They are also required to take a one-day compulsory basic training course paid for by the council.
Applicants must provide evidence of an offer of employment, place at college or training course.
For people already in work, college or training, a scooter will only be provided if they can prove they are at risk of failing to attend due to transport difficulties.

Information leaflets are also available from a variety of sites, including Job Centre Plus, training providers, local links and libraries.
Also check out children’s centres, colleges/sixth form schools and various other council run groups.
Those who qualify for a scooter will be entitled to a free package which includes compulsory basic training, insurance cover, breakdown cover, road tax, servicing and maintenance.
And they will also be provided with safety equipment and a security lock. The bicycle package includes security lock, lights, safety helmet and a high visibility vest.
Liz Redfern, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Helping people access jobs and training is vital if we are to boost the economy”.
