Brave youngster Abigial Cook took delivery of a top award last week in recognition of her inspiring fight against Batten’s disease.

The 10-year-old was named the joint winner of the inspirational young person award at the Doncaster Pride Awards, organised by the Doncaster Free Press, in October.

She was too ill to attend the ceremony at Doncaster Racecourse so the award was delivered to her home in Warmsworth last week.

Abigail’s condition causes her to lose her sight and mobility so her family raised money to help tick things off her bucket list, including a trip to Flroida to swim with dolphins.

She won the award alongside Mae Fox, six, who has spastic quadraplegic cerebral palsy which left her unable to walk. She had an operation last year and now enjoys swimming.

Doncaster mayor Ros Jones said at the ceremony: “These are exceptional people in all different kinds of ways who overcome adversity to deliver for themselves and for the borough.”
