IKEA extends chocolate recall over nut allergy risk

IKEA has extended a recent recall to cover six more chocolate products after it emerged they contained nuts, which was not mentioned correctly on the packaging.

The Swedish retailer said that hazelnuts and/or almonds had been “frequently detected” in the affected products - including bars and chocolate spread - and as such posed a serious risk to anyone with a nut intolerance or allergy.

The latest recall comes a month after the chain withdrew its Choklad Mork 60% and 70% over the same concerns.

The latest products to be affected are:

In a statement IKEA said: “Product safety and quality are of highest priority to IKEA and the global recall concerns all best before dates of the affected products.

“The presence of hazelnut and almond has been frequently and not only occasionally detected, which underlines that these chocolate products are not suitable for consumption by those who are allergic or sensitive to these allergens.

“The product information does not state this frequent presence clearly enough as the product labels only state ‘may contain’. Therefore IKEA is recalling these products globally. The products are safe for anyone not allergic or sensitive to almond and/or hazelnut.”

Concerned customers can return the affected products to any IKEA store without proof of purchase, or can call the store#s customer services department on 0203 645 0010 to return the products. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required.
