A huge blaze at a South Yorkshire recycling centre was accidental, fire investigators have said.

Up to 30 firefighters have been in attendance since 10am on Monday and it is believed that up to 500 tonnes of plastic were ablaze in Kilnhurst, Rotherham.

"A fire investigation has taken place into the cause of the fire and it is believed to be accidental due to machinery.

"Emergency services and partner agencies have carried out a further assessment of the fire at the recycling site in Kilnhurst, Rotherham. The smoke levels have now reduced and it is safe for all residents to return to their homes.

"We would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding over the last couple of days."

Public Health England has said anyone with respiratory problems include coughing and wheezing, breathlessness, sputum (phlegm) production and chest pain should seek medical advice or call NHS 111.
