Ten firefighters were involved in the rescue of a horse from the River Dearne near Mexborough on Monday afternoon.

The crews had to carry their equipment about a mile from Pastures Road after the alarm was raised about 11am.

They first pulled a dog from the 6ft deep water and then spent about three hours guiding the horse to the bank and eventually pulling it out with a harness.

A fire service spokesman said both animals were fine when they got to the bank.
