The generosity of a Conisbrough family has boosted Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals’ fundraising quest for a second family room on Ward G5 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary by a staggering £4,000.

Lynne Shelton, together with her son Ross and daughter Collette, masterminded a series of fundraising activities to thank ward staff for the care given to their late Mum and Nan, Kathleen Craven, who used the family room during her time at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Hoping to raise £1,000 the family held a series of fundraising events. Collette shaved her head, coffee mornings were held, plus a main fundraising night which included a raffle. The family’s activities attracted the support of local people, businesses and organisations throughout South Yorkshire all doing their bit to help. A massive £5,000 was raised of which £4,000 was donated to the health trust. The remaining money will be shared out to Macmillan services in Doncaster and Barnsley.

Lynne Shelton said: “My family and I spent a great deal of time with Mum in the family room on Ward G5. It made such a big difference to her wellbeing and gave us some good memories. We are very grateful that this room was available. When we discovered that staff were launching a new fundraising campaign for a second family room we jumped at the chance to help so that others could benefit from staying in such a lovely room. The generosity of everyone involved was unbelievable.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of the hospital trust Jo Mann, Nurse Specialist Gynae-Oncology on Ward G5, said: “We are very grateful to Lynne, Ross and Collette for boosting our fundraising appeal for a new family room. We know that a second room will enhance the hospital experience for many more women and their families. This is why we’ve decided to launch this new fundraising project.”

Ward G5 cares for women with a range of gynaecology conditions including ovarian, cervical and breast cancers that become very ill and need to come into hospital. Staff on Ward G5 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary want to raise £21,000 for a second family room to give even more patients the opportunity to be cared for in a private and comfortable environment.
