Thousands of children who live in poverty across the Dearne are missing out on vital school meals, it has been revealed.

Shocking figures estimated by leading charity The Children’s Society, shows 1,800 children in Rotherham are missing out on school meals. In the Doncaster North constituency, including Mexborough, 1,300 children miss meals and in the Wentworth and Dearne constituency the figure is 1,000.

A Fair and Square Campaign has now been launched by the Children’s Society. It is calling on the Government to make free school meals available to all families which are struggling.

Working with 38 Degrees, the charity has gathered over 90,000 signatures supporting its campaign.

Speaking about the figures, Dearne MP John Healey said: “I’m worried that things could get worse with free schools and academies able to set their own rules on free school meals. And the shake-up of the benefit system and Universal Credit will make it less clear how, and how many children will qualify for free school meals.”

Breakfast clubs too are on the decline, he added.
