Staff and visitors are wired for sound

GRIMSBY Hospital Radio has achieved a unique first in the UK by being heard by visitors and staff - as well as patients - around Grimsby’s Diana Princess of Wales Hospital from today (September 10).

For the first time the volunteer-run station is broadcasting not only direct to patient’s bedsides but also in the concourse and restaurant areas of the hospital.

The move was prompted by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust which asked the station if it could help to promote health related messages across the hospital site.

Trust Chief Nurse Dr Karen Dunderdale said: “We recognise the power of radio in communicating important key messages to an audience. What better way of spreading the news about important health related messages, such as awareness weeks and common signs and symptoms to look out for, than by airing them on our own hospital radio?”

Chairman and Station Manager Jeff Todd said “We acknowledge the Trust’s faith in the station and are happy to help. This is fabulous news and will increase our listener numbers many fold.”

The League of Friends of Grimsby Hospital has paid the PRS Licence fees for the concourse and restaurant areas. Mr Todd said: “We also thank the League of Friends for their generosity.”

Grimsby Hospital Radio is a registered charity and needs more volunteers to help run the station. As a charity, the organisation cannot transmit advertising to generate income. Sponsorship from businesses is acceptable and those businesses will be mentioned on air.
