DESERT runner Ray Matthews is passing on his own incredible story, in a book about to be published.

Me and My Shadow is 70-year old athlete Ray’s own account of how he found ways to break down barriers, and develop the mental and physical toughness he needed to achieve.

He invites the reader along, to experience a 100km race across the Sahara desert, to share in his thoughts, his moments of despair and exultation as he realises just one of his personal dreams.

And if his book inspires just one person to change their mindset and start a new adventure towards better health and fitness, then he will be happy, said Ray.

The gym buddy and now life coach who trains from a Parkgate gym, started his sporting career as a boxer....and at that too, he excelled.

He believes that that early discipline set the stage for his future challenges, and pays homage to the trainers who influenced him.

Ray too, has inspired many who lacked confidence in their abilities to succeed at sport, and his easy, confiding writing style is itself highly motivational.

He challenges every expectation, with insight gained over many years of spending time in sport, and with people.

At the age of almost 70, Ray ran the Sahara with a broken toe, then a short while after was the first to run the 50-mile Rotherham Round Race twice.

He launched himself as a motivational speaker, became a UK representative for the Italian company behind worldwide desert runs, and now he has a new string to his bow...

He has thrown his weight behind the Rotherham based World Aid Foundation.

Ray said: “This charity shows as much passion for helping underprivileged people, as I do for my sport, and is 100 per cent transparent regarding its proceeds”.

It aims to reduce human suffering by simplifying aid work and humanitarian conducts around the globe he explained.

Ray’s book, Me and My Shadow will be available to buy early next year.
