The family of a suicidal woman who broke her back after falling from a hospital building are demanding to know why she was apparently left unsupervised.

Donna Halliwell, 49, has attempted suicide 26 times in two years and her distraught family say she is not getting the medical help she needs.

Speaking about the incident at Doncaster Royal infirmary in September daughter Corrin said: “I was furious I can’t believe she was allowed to wander off the ward. It said she was a suicide risk on her notes, someone should have been watching her.”

Corrin says her mum, who lives in Thorne, is under the care of mental health services but not getting the treatment she needs. Mrs Halliwell is back in DRI following a recent suicide attempt. Corrin, 32, added: “These are all cries for help, she doesn’t want to die she just wants help.”

A spokesman for Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are working with Mrs Halliwell and her family, as we have done over the last two years, to support her. RDaSH has carried out an investigation into the incident in September regarding our patient at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and we have shared the findings with her family. We are in touch with the family and doing our best to support them and are arranging a meeting with them as soon as possible.”
