Hospital supports implant patients

BREAST implant protesters who targeted a Doncaster hospital have welcomed an offer to carry out replacement operations free of charge.
Officials from Ramsay Health, which runs the private Park Hill Hospital in the grounds of Doncaster Royal Infirmary, came out to explain their offer to patients as women carried placards outside.
The hospital was the venue for surgery carried out by a firm called The Cosmetic Surgery Centre which fitted controversial PIP implants.
Bosses at Park Hill have written to patients who had their operations there to offer the CSC patients a consultation, and surgery if necessary.
Laura Steel, one of the patients who had implants at Park Hill, said: “They have said everyone can have removal and replacement. But the problem is you have to wait for months. What happens if something leaks in the meantime?
“They have said they will take them out and replace them, and that is what we want.
“But I’m still going to speak to my lawyers. I am not happy that I am having to have a second operation. There is the worry about what happens before anything is done.”
Health concerns surfaced after it emerged the now-closed French company Poly Implant Prostheses filled implants with non-medical grade silicone intended for mattresses.
Bosses at Park Hill hope to have all the Doncaster patients seen by a consultant within two months.
Dawn Abbott, general manager of Park Hill Hospital said: “A high standard of patient care is important to us. As CSC has ceased trading we made the decision to contact all CSC patients whose PIP implant breast augmentation was carried out here and ensure they get the same treatment we’d offer our own patients.
“This is despite CSC being entirely separate from Ramsay or Park Hill and the fact that we are not obliged to act as we have.
“The patients will be offered a free scan and a consultation with a surgeon. After discussion with the surgeon, if the patient wishes to have their PIP implants removed and replaced this will be done at no cost to the patient.”
