A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched in a bid to preserve a popular waterway and beauty spot in Conisbrough.

The Don Gorge on the banks of the River Don runs from Sprotborough to Conisbrough Viaduct and its walkways, cycle paths and fishing areas are popular with visitors.

With hundreds of types of plants and more than 200 species of birds and butterflies, it is also a well-liked spot for nature lovers.

But the Canal & River Trust have now launched an appeal to raise £25,000 to ensure its future as a beauty spot is protected.

They plan to use the money to provide improved fishing access points, install better visitor information and help defend the Trans Pennine Trail from river erosion and flooding.

Donations will help to support the work of a group called the Don Gorge Conservation Volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the banks of the river and surrounding areas.

Jane Thomson, Enterprise Manager for the Canal & River Trust, said: “By making a donation and contributing towards the £25,000 needed, you can help to deliver the vital equipment to those who are donating their time to protect the banks of the river and the nature reserve on the other side of the tow path.

“Having local support to help this project happen would be fantastic for this green corridor as it’s important we do all we can to help protect the river bank and continue to improve this vital nature corridor to ensure the habitats can sustain the important wildlife populations they support.

“Every penny donated will be spent directly on this project.

“It is thanks to the funding and cooperation partner organisations and the support of local communities that these types of appeals are possible so it’s hoped people see the benefit in this and help us continue the improvements.”

The Don Gorge Conservation Volunteers have organized a volunteering day on October 2 and are appealing for people to get involved.

If people would like to help support the project they can text TRAIL to 70007 to donate £3 or log on to www.canalrivertrust.org.uk for more information.
