Former journalist and author returns to Isle
AN author and retired journalist is urging Isle residents to support a fundraising campaign in memory of his sister who lost her battle with cancer.
Roy Briggs, 73, of Wolds Close, Crowle, is donating £1 of every copy sold of his autobiography ‘Eve of Forgiveness: A Journalist’s Journey’ to Cancer Research UK.
He dedicated the book to his younger sister Ann, who died of pancreatic cancer a few years ago.
He said: “As well as buying copies of the book people are also giving me donations for Cancer Research UK and I’m very grateful for all the support.
“Most families are touched by cancer at some time and this is my way of paying tribute to my sister’s life.”
Mr Briggs and wife Joyce, 72, have recently moved back to the Isle from Scarborough after a 30 year absence to be closer to their daughter Sandra, 51, and granddaughter, Emily, 16, who live in Fieldside, Epworth.
The couple spent eight years living in Low Burnham, Epworth, in the 1970s and 80s, during which time Roy ran Briggs News Agency in Doncaster.
His career spanned five decades and saw him spend 28 years in news reporting, followed by 20 years specialising in horse racing coverage.
He said: “I really enjoyed writing the book.
“I have a lot of good memories from my career and it was great to go back over them.
“The book seems to have been popular with people so far and I’m so grateful for that.”
Outside of work, Mr and Mrs Briggs were well known among animal lovers in the Isle for forming an RSPCA support group.
Mr Briggs eventually became chairman of the charity’s Doncaster branch.
He has so far raised about £400 for the cancer charity through sales of his book and is looking forward to meeting up with old friends on the Isle.
He said: “We only moved back here a few weeks ago and it will be nice to catch up with people.
“We always enjoyed living here and it’s nice to be back.”
