AMATEUR florists transformed a Doncaster church with a display to raise money for its upkeep.

Worshippers at St Peter’s Church on Warmsworth Road created floral arrangements based on their favourite hymns.

In all, 10 groups put forward arrangements which were on display over a three-day flower festival.

The event raised £271 for church funds, which were depleted recently when parishioners had to pay a contribution to the cost of re-surfacing the car park.

Part of the cost was paid for with a lottery grant.

Among those taking part in the flower festival was Sheila Barnes, of Mill Lane, Warmsworth.

She helped put together the Mothers’ Union display, themed on the hymn Tell Out My Soul, and depicting a blue Mary and a gold angel Gabriel, surrounded by flowers.

She said: “There were some really beautiful arrangements at the festival.

“They were really colourful and that is down to the wonderful colourful flowers that are around at this time of year.”
