Five-year-old girl is beaten up at station

DETECTIVES are investigating after a five-year-old girl from Mexborough was hit and verbally abused at a local train station.

A woman is believed to have hit the girl several times and aggressively sworn at her on the platform at Rotherham Central station on Saturday, March 26.

Rail staff were alerted at about 4pm and officers from British Transport Police (BTP) arrived to arrest a 24-year-old Mexborough woman.

She has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Officers are currently conducting inquiries into the incident, including viewing CCTV in the area and speaking to the local community.

Detective Constable Andy Lehman, of BTP’s Criminal Investigation Department, said: “The person responsible here launched an aggressive torrent of abuse on a defenceless child – who was unable to help herself.

“This was a cowardly attack and I would appeal for anyone who was at the station at the time to come forward and help police with their enquiries urgently.”
