Workers at a Doncaster factory were safely evacuated yesterday when a fire broke out.

Four fire engines were sent to deal with the incident at the Pegler-Hattersley works in Belmont Avenue, Balby, just after 4pm.

A fire in the factory’s ventilation system had started accidentally, said a South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman.

The firefighters from Doncaster, Adwick and Edlington stations spent more than an hour tackling the fire and a relief crew continued damping down to ensure no chemicals were affected by the heat.

The cause of the fire is today being investigated by management.
