Conservationists fear a historic town centre building could remain empty for years despite plans to move ahead with demolition work to make way for a new hotel.
The former Doncaster High School for Girls is earmarked as a four star boutique hotel as part of the £300 million Civic and Cultural Quarter.
Doncaster Council chiefs are now set to agree funding in the coming weeks to finally demolish part of the building, along with other buildings like the Civic Theatre, paving the way for development.
But Archie Sinclair, secretary of the Doncaster Civic Trust, said he believes there are already too many hotels in the town and added: “I think the council may struggle to get a hotel chain to operate it.”
A Doncaster Council spokesman said the authority’s development partner Muse would deal with the matter of securing a deal with a hotel company.
