Firefighters worked together with a farmer to extinguish a blaze in fields near Sandtoft, said witnesses.

The fire happened on land close to Low Levels Bank at about 3pm on Friday.

An onlooker, who took the picture above, said a firefighter at the scene said a vehicle had gone up in flames.

She added: “The crew were having to relay water to the scene using the farmer’s 4x4 truck as the fire engine could not get onto the field.

“It was attracting quite a lot of attention from people passing by.

“There was a load of smoke going up around the fields.

“The fire crew was there for quite a while tackling the blaze.”

The three fire services which cover the Isle of Axholme said they had no record of the blaze on their incident log.

However a spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said a crew could have put the blaze out while returning from another job and not logged it.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said there has not been any increase in fires across the area - despite recent dry weather.

A spokeswoman for the Humberside service said: “Our crews have not noticed any significant increase in incidents across the whole of the borough.”
