THERE are still places available for people to park their sleeping bags at Parkgate for a night, to help young runaways.
Rotherham charity SAFE@LAST will hold its BIG Sleepout for the fifth year at venues including Parkgate shopping centre.
It is the charity’s signature event to raise cash to help the young homeless, and since 2007 over 1000 people have raised £70,000 plus for the crucial work.
The night gives people an insight into conditions for many thousands of young runaways who find themselves sleeping rough.
Those taking part are allowed basic items to keep warm such as a sleeping bag and cardboard box. This year the charity hopes to have over 500 participants.
Fundraising Officer Barbara Raszyk said: “The BIG Sleepout highlights the struggles young runaways face. When children sleep rough they do it because they feel they have no choice. They do it because they judge other options as worse than a cold, lonely night on the streets. Money raised will help us to ensure they know they have a safer choice.”
The Parkgate sleep-out is on October 19. Prior to that, sleep-outs will be at Doncaster’s Lakeside on September 28, and The Core, Barnsley on October 5. For more information and to register for the event visit: www.thebigsleepout.co.uk
