FOOTY fans at Mexborough Pitt Street Infants’ School got a treat last week, when England Ladies’ and Doncaster Rovers’ players dropped by, to share some time with pupils.

Four Rovers’ players joined England players Sophie Bradley and Casey Stoney in leading a special assembly, then held an open question and answer session.

They received a huge welcome, and free tickets to Rovers’ games were handed out to pupils who had 100 per cent attendance up to half term.

Deputy Headteacher Libby Pryce explained that the visit was linked to the Rovers’ Roadshow Initiative, to support schools in improving attendance.

It is one of a series of efforts aimed at both pupils and parents.

She said: “We have worked with the Rovers before, at after-school clubs and on the Dream Team Challenge, that helps pupils improve their maths skills by plotting goal scores on a chart.

“This latest focus on attendance is a new initiative and the children were delighted with their visitors, ‘though a little bit in awe of them.

“They wanted to know all about the players’ own schooldays, and came up with some interesting questions...”

Sophie and Casey were in Doncaster ahead of their Euro 2013 qualifier at Serbia, that took place yesterday (November 23) at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Rovers’ players were Brian Stock, Oscar Radford and Adam Lockwood, with sports education officer Liam Scully.
