COMMUNITY minded kids got digging to help spruce up the central hub of their village.

Budding Monty Dons from The Hill Primary School’s gardening club transformed two flower beds outside Thurnscoe Community Centre.

Village stalwart Steve Ellis who organised the scheme was there, and MP John Healey dropped by to wield a spade and give the hard-working youngsters a bit of a boost.

“We’ve had some ongoing problems with vandalism and wanted to brighten the area up”, explained Steve, who received a donation of five tonnes of top soil and plants from Nostell Priory Shrubs and Roses.

“These flower beds were neglected, so we got local kids involved in the hope that they will want to protect the gardens in the future.

“There are two further flower beds and they will be planted up soon by pupils from Gooseacre School.”

Dearne SNT chief Allan Sneddon is involved with the project and stopped by to view, with local councillors. The Houghton Road Centre offers cuppas and chat, with cards, bric-a-brac and plants for sale at its drop-in Friday morning sessions.
