Proving to be top of the class when it comes to performance is an Isle school.

The government’s Department for Education (DfE) published its key stage four tables last week which revealed that South Axholme Academy has certainly being doing its homework as it shone above the other 14 secondary education establishments in North Lincolnshire.

The academy, based in Burnham Road, Epworth, achieved a 0.64 in its Progress 8 score, meaning it is well above average. The nearest rivals being Outwood Academy in Foxhills and Baysgarth School with 0.49 and 0.37 respectively.

Other figures showed that of the 167 pupils 52 per cent achieved a grade 5 or above in English and maths at GSCE level, and 93 per cent stayed on in education or entered employment.

Principal and head of trust Mrs Sarah Thompson said: “We are extremely proud of the sustained improvements we have made at the academy and of the amazing achievements of all of our students.

“Our Progress 8 score of 0.64 (“well above average”) is fantastic, and the new 9-5 measure in both English and maths is similarly impressive with South Axholme Academy 13 per cent above the national average.

“Despite pressures from these new performance measures and challenging financial circumstances, the curriculum remains broad and balanced at the academy.

“The percentage of students achieving the EBacc suite of subjects is also cause for celebration; again 12 per cent above the national figure.

“The news of the success of the academy is already making a difference, with record numbers of parents and Year 6 students visiting South Axholme on its recent open evening.”

She added: “It has been, quite simply, a fantastic summer of results.

“The DfE tables validate what we already knew; that South Axholme Academy is an amazing place to both learn and work.

“With our superb A level results and outstanding performance at GCSE, everyone involved with the academy feels rightly proud and thrilled. We are now focussed on ensuring that we do even better next summer.”
