Healey backs votes at 16

Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey has registered his support for votes at 16.

He joins young people, organisations and a network of politicians in a UK-wide campaign calling for the voting age to be lowered.

John became an official supporter on the campaign’s website, for the 1.5 million 16 and 17-year-olds who cannot currently vote in the UK.

The MP said: “Many young people are interested in lots of issues and want to influence decision-makers.

“We’ve seen this by the way they’ve made their voice heard on decisions the Government is making which are hitting young people hard – like trebling university tuition fees and scrapping the Future Jobs Fund and Education Maintenance Allowance.

“Sixteen and 17-year-olds have valid views, they should get the chance to have their say and we should listen to them. I call on people of all ages to back this campaign by visiting the site and becoming a supporter too.”
