Long before students and lecturing staff arrive at Doncaster College, Steve Barber is out in the early morning in all weathers, keeping the College spick and span.
For his dedication and commitment, Steve Barber, has become the sixth recipient of the Professional Recognition Award, awarded by Doncaster College to its staff.
Steve, 35, an external cleaner, responsible for keeping the area around the college tidy and clean, has won the award for the summer term and was presented with his award by George Trow, principal and chief executive of Doncaster College.
Steve, from Scawsby, near Doncaster, said that he was surprised to win but said, “it’s great to be recognised by other staff in other sections and to know that you are doing a good job and it’s also good recognition for the team I work with.”
The Awards were launched in late 2011, to recognise the professional contribution that staff make towards the work of the college. The award is given three times a year so a member of staff will be honoured once a term.
Staff are nominated by at least five colleagues from different areas of the college. The college’s executive team then views the nominations and decides on a winner.
Steve’s nominees said of him, ‘he always goes above and beyond’ and ‘although classed as the external cleaner he goes further and supports the whole of the estates team with all of their activities’ ‘he stands out as a hidden gem’ and ‘thoroughly deserves to win this award.’
His prizes include vouchers for a meal at the College’s Waterfront Restaurant, and for the college’s Inspire hair salon.
