HEARD the one about the vicar telling jokes for charity?

It might sound like a gag, but the Rev Louise Tinniswood is set to become a stand-up comedian to raise cash for Comic Relief.

The Rev Tinniswood, a curate in the Diocese of Sheffield, will be completing a six minute stand-up routine next Tuesday at a Charity Gala in Sheffield’s City Hall in aid of Red Nose Day.

This year’s theme for Comic Relief is “Do Something Funny for Money” and the BBC have been running a competition called “Stand Up If You Dare” where they have held regional events around the country and asking people to get sponsored to do a three minute stand-up comedy routine.

Louise, who serves her curacy at St Saviour’s, Auckley & Holy Trinity and St Oswald’s, Finningley went to an event at Meadowhall where she was chosen to go through to the ‘bootcamp’ at BBC Radio Sheffield.

There, the selected group met up with Toby Foster who presents the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Sheffield and runs the Last Laugh Comedy Club in Sheffield and has been on the circuit for many years.

Toby worked with those who got through the regional stage, looking at their material and honing their stand up skills before their performance next week.

Louise said: “I really enjoy writing and performing stand up and being able to do it for Comic Relief is a great opportunity. I also hope that when people watch me that it might begin to alter some of the stereotypes people have of what vicars are like.”

She added: “I’m really looking forward to performing at the Memorial Hall in Sheffield where I’ve been to see lots of stand-up comedy in the past. I’m sure performing in front of 400 people will be nerve wracking but hopefully very exciting too!”
