Coaches were drafted in to transport commuters between Doncaster and South Elmsall whilst emergency repairs were carried out on the trainline.
The disruption was caused by falling material from a bridge over the railway.
Work started at 10.45am this morning and was cleared just after 4pm.
Coaches are currently conveying passengers between Doncaster and Wakefield Westgate in both directions until further notice.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We apologise for the inconvenience.”
