CUDWORTH

A TODDLER Club will meet at Grimethorpe Pentecostal Church on Tuesday at 10am.

DRESS for Less, a charity shop run jointly by Community Partnership and Grimethorpe Pentecostal Church is open Monday to Friday from 10am-3pm.

A COFFEE morning will be held at Cudworth St John The Baptist Church on Wednesday from 9.30am, proceeds for church funds.

DARFIELD

A LARGE congregation attended the rededication service of Houghton Main Memorial at Darfield All Saints’ Church on Sunday, June 26. During the service writer and mining historian, Brian Elliott, told the story of the Houghton Main Overwind Disaster and choral items and a solo were performed by Houghton Main Male Voice Choir. Following the service the congregation went outside to the memorial for the prayer of dedication and the laying of a wreath by a member of the Hardcastle family who are related to two of the victims of the tragedy. Also attending the service were “Black Diamonds” author Catherine Bailey and Darfield-bred author Martyn Johnson. They and Mr Elliott, along with Stephen Smith MBE, Darfield resident and national poet Ian McMillan and Frank Morley have all been guest speakers at fundraising events organised by The Friends of Darfield Churchyard to finance the restoration of the memorial. The disaster happened on December 30, 1866, when ten men were killed. The monument was unveiled in November of the following year.

BOLTON

A VIOLIN duo will give performances during the afternoon at Dearne Valley Care Centre’s summer fair on Saturday. Everyone is welcome to attend the event, which will be opened by Coun May Noble at 1.15pm and will feature various stalls and games to raise money for the residents’ fund.

TOP vocalist Paul Somers entertained residents at Dearne Valley Care Centre on Friday afternoon.

A SUMMER fair will be held at Bolton Hall Nursing Home on July 16.
