A DEARNE cricket club has formed a new youth team – thanks to a donation of £500 from a national supermarket chain.

Thurnscoe Institute Cricket Club were awarded the sum from the Co-operative Group’s Community Fund and have used it to set up an under-11s team.

Club Treasurer and Project Manager Gary Marsh said the money will help to create the area’s “next generation of cricketers”.

He added: “The young players will receive first class coaching in cricket and also lifestyle, and give them physical activity and also build their self-esteem, and by also welcoming their parents to the club we hope to create a sense of community spirit.”

Ian Guest, from The Co-operative’s South Yorkshire and Chesterfield Area Committee, said: “Because our members own the business, they get a share in any of the profits we make.

“It’s a scheme we’re very proud of, not only because it gives us the chance to thank members for shopping with us, but because so many people choose to give something back to local communities.”
