Customers’ cars go up in ‘arson’ fire

FIREMEN battled through the night as a large fire spead across three units at a Parkgate industrial park last week.

Cars were burned out and and a plumbers’ workshop and store-room were destroyed by the blaze, off Mangham Road.

Some 25 firefighters battled to contain the blaze at the PC Kelly, CB Motor Bodies and Coopers’ Auto Body units, at around 2.30am on April 21.

The PC Kelly unit suffered most damage. Peter Kelly, who has been there two years, said he understood the fire was deliberate and was thought to be the work of thieves who had broken in to steal copper and scrap, then tried to cover their tracks.

Michelle Cooper, of Coopers’ Auto Body Units, said there had been a delay in contacting customers whose cars were damaged, as she and her husband could not access details from within the office.

Police are investigating.
