Curvy Elena in beauty bid

A size 16 model from Doncaster will be hoping to prove that bigger is beautiful when she takes part in a beauty pageant for the nation’s curviest girls this weekend.

Elena Raouna, aged 21, will be going head to head with competitors from across the country at the final of Miss British Curve in Surrey tomorrow.

And she is hoping her appearance will help make a statement for young girls and also put the town on the map.
“I want to show that you don’t have to be a stick thin model to take part in a beauty contest,” she said.

“I hope that me taking part in the competition will show girls that they can have self confidence about the way they look and prove that, no matter what size you are, you can look beautiful and take part in pageants.”

Former Campsmount School student Elena, of Norton, who celebrates her 22nd birthday next week, landed her place in the finals after being picked out as Miss Doncaster Curve earlier this year.

She triumphed in an online vote against scores of other local girls and was then picked out from a panel of judges to represent the town at the national finals where 20 girls from across Britain will be hoping to be crowned as the victor.

The finalists will be taking part in catwalk shows in both formal wear and summer wear and making a speech to the judges to give an insight into their personalities before the winner is revealed.

The show is in aid of Cancer Research - and Elena, who works as an assistant at Harry’s Fish Bar in Dunsville, holds the charity close to her heart.
She said: “My grandad had cancer so taking part means a lot to me on many levels.

“It is something I really believe in. Also, working in a fish and chip shop, it shows to people as well that you don’t have to have a glamorous job either!

“I am very excited and looking forward to it.”
