Woman dies in road collision at Wombwell

A 71-year old woman has died after being involved in a road collision at Wombwell.

The woman, named locally as Edwina Thickett of Hemingfield Road, Wombwell, was on Hough Lane near the crossroads with Wood Walk, Dovecliffe Road and Hemmingfield Road when the incident took place at about 9.52am yesterday (Thursday).

It is reported that a green Mercedes Vito driven by a 28-year-old man from Barnsley was travelling along Dovecliffe Road and arrived at the junction with Hough Lane crossroads, intending to turn left.

The Mercedes is understood to have turned left into Hough Lane, where the collision occurred.

The woman is believed to have been crossing the road towards the train station. She received fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes was uninjured.

A post-mortem on the dead woman is expected to take place today, followed by an inquest opening next week.
