A man charged with the double murder of his wife and daughter is due to appear in court today.

John Redfern, 70, is alleged to have killed his wife Jean, also 70, along with their 33-year old daughter Sarah, at their bungalow in Sandygate, Wath on Monday, July 22.

The pensioner is due before Sheffield Crown Court this morning for a preliminary hearing.

Relatives of Jean and Sarah have paid tribute to the pair.

A family statement, released last week, said: “The family of Jean and Sarah are devastated by the news of their deaths.

“Jean was a much loved sister and aunt. Sarah was a wonderful, kind and loving niece and cousin. We are at a loss to know why they died.”

A post mortem examination revealed that Jean died from asphyxiation and Sarah from severe head injuries.
