Firefighters spent hours tackling a huge blaze involving hundreds of tyres.
The fire at a tyre recycling business on an industrial estate off Springvale Road, Grimethorpe, Barnsley, was discovered at around 5am yesterday.
Fire crews from Barnsley, Cudworth and Tankersley were deployed to the incident because of the size of the flames reported and the thick black smoke generated.
Residents and surrounding businesses were advised to keep their doors and windows closed to prevent smoke filtering inside properties.
Police officers closed off surrounding roads while the firefighting operation was under way.
It is believed that around 500 tyres were involved in the blaze.
Once the flames were extinguished firefighters spent hours damping down to prevent the fire re-igniting.
Crews left the scene at around midday.
An investigation into the cause of the blaze is now under way.
Group manager Kevin Ronan, of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “When we arrived the tyres were heavily involved in fire and there was a big plume of thick, black, acrid smoke, which is what the main issue was.
“The tyres were outside a fairly new industrial unit and firefighters did a great job in preventing the flames spreading to the building – there was some radiated heat damage to the exterior but crews stopped the flames jumping inside.
“We are investigating the cause.”
