Two men have been charged with murder over the killing of an 81-year-old Rotherham pensioner attacked as he walked to morning prayers.

Mushin Ahmed was attacked in the early hours of Monday, August 10, and died in hospital from his injuries later that month.

He was seriously assaulted in an area close to Fitzwilliam Road, Rotherham.

Police have now confirmed two men in their 20s have been charged with his murder.

Damien Hunt, 29, of Doncaster Road, Rotherham, who was previously charged with assaulting Mr Ahmed, and Dale Jones, 29, of East Bawtry Road, Rotherham, have both been charged with his murder.

Jones is to appear at Rotherham Magistrates Court tomorrow, Saturday, with both men scheduled to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday.

Two other men arrested earlier in the investigation have been released.

A 21-year-old man who was previously charged with assaulting Mr Ahmed has had the charges against him withdrawn and has been released.

A 24-year-old man, also from Rotherham, who was arrested on Wednesday, August 19, has been released from police bail.

Detective Inspector Victoria Short, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: “The family of Mr Ahmed continue to ask for privacy from the media and would like to pass on their gratitude for the support they have received from the local community and beyond.”
