A total of 27 South Yorkshire speeding motorists have been prosecuted over the last two years for giving false information to avoid penalty points.

They were investigated by a police team monitoring those clocked on speed cameras.

Penalties ranged from three months in jail to a six month driving ban.

Chief Inspector Glen Suttenwood, said: “ Those who believe they can speed and then try to evade taking responsibility for their actions are seriously mistaken.”

“The enquiry team have an essential role as the drivers who are prepared to risk the lives of others by exceeding the speed limit and believing they can get away with it need to understand rapidly that they are not exempt from the law and they will be caught and prosecuted.”

Seven more cases are under investigation and another three are due at court soon.
