A SECOND arrest has been made by detectives investigating an attack that left a dad fighting for his life.
Police confirmed that a 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the assault on Iain Eldridge.
Mr Eldridge, 35, a father of two, remained in a stable but critical condition. The 35-year-old of Auckley suffered a serious head injury in the unprovoked attack in Station Road, Bawtry, just after midnight on January 1.
Paul Oakden, 21, of Kingswood Close, Bawtry, appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with grievous bodily harm.
Wearing a grey and black striped jumper Oakden had his head bowed throughout the 30 minute hearing which was attended by relatives.
He was remanded in custody and will appear again via video link later this month.
A police spokesman said the 19-year-old arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender had been bailed.
Meanwhile detectives are trying to trace a motorist who may have witnessed the assault.
They have released this grainy CCTV image of a car that was seen in the Total Garage forecourt in High Street, Bawtry, between 12.02am and 12.10am on New Year’s Day.
Officers believe people in the car would have had sight of the incident and may be able to help with the investigation.
Anyone who can identify the car and/or the people in it are asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 87 of Sunday, 1 January 2012. Alternatively people can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
