Police probe alleged attack on man with mental health issues at Sheffield supermarket

Police are investigating after a supermarket worker allegedly assaulted a man with mental health issues.

The 35-year-old shopper had reportedly been accused of stealing ­shampoo and the 20-minute incident was caught on CCTV at a Tesco store in Savile Street, Sheffield, on Saturday, May 23.

The man was allegedly seen dancing in the freezer isle waving a fairy wand.

It is claimed he was wrestled to the floor by a member of staff.

The man’s mum claimed he had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for 12 years.

Both Tesco and South Yorkshire Police are investigating.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “These are extremely serious allegations. We are conducting our own investigation and will of course fully support the police with theirs.”

They refused to comment on whether any staff had been suspended over the incident.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police added: “Officers are investigating a report of an alleged assault against a 35-year-old man at the Tesco supermarket on Savile Street in Sheffield on Saturday 23rd May.

“Various enquiries have been conducted and officers were due to meet with the complainant on Thursday, June 11.”

A 35-year-old man has appeared in court and admitted theft and criminal damage.

No arrests have been made in relation to the complaint made against the Tesco member of staff.
