POLICE have made a series of arrests while targeting metal thieves in Barnsley.
As part of Operation Banner, officers stopped 118 motorists and seized 10 vehicles. Eight of the 10 stopped were issued with fixed penalty notices, and two were reported on summons.
A total of 11 people were arrested during the five-day operation – for offences including metal theft, assault and non-payment of fines.
Twenty-two fixed penalty notices were issued and one warning was issued for possession of cannabis.
Inspector Gill Blake of South Yorkshire Police, who led the operation said: “Operation Banner was a great success, with over 100 vehicles stopped. We will continue to take action against metal thieves and similar operations will be occurring regularly”.
She added: “metal theft is not a crime that is specific to Barnsley; but it is an issue that needs to be addressed nationally”.
