A Doncaster business owner says it is a miracle no one was killed after a car careered into his shop as he stacked shelves.

Adil Saed, owner of the European Mini Market, was working with a shop assistant when the car smashed into the shop on St Sepulchre Gate West.

Mr Saed said: “I was restocking the fridge when I heard a massive bang. I almost had a heart attack, all the drinks fell all over the place and I didn’t know what had happened.

“When I looked outside and saw the car I couldn’t believe it, I thought the whole building was going to fall down.

“It’s a very busy road and people are crossing every two minutes so people could’ve easily been knocked over.

“It’s a miracle no one was killed.”

Police said a 53-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in connection with the crash

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said the driver had collided with four parked vehicles before smashing into the shop.

Mr Saed, who has been forced to close his shop following Saturday’s crash, at about 5pm, says his livelihood has now been put in jeopardy. He said: “I don’t know at this stage when I can open again, I’m waiting for a structural engineer as the damage is so bad.

“One of the walls will need completely rebuilding.

“I keep trying to speak to the police to get the details so I can give them to my insurance company, but they aren’t getting back to me.

“This is my livelihood, I’ve got a six-year-old son to provide for.”

Along with the money Mr Saed is losing on a daily basis from customers he has also lost £2,000 in stock.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called to a report of a car in collision with a shop wall on St Sepulchre Gate West on Saturday, at about 5.10pm.

“It was reported a silver Rover collided with four parked vehicles before colliding with a shop front.

“The driver suffered facial injuries and was arrested on suspicion of driving over the prescribed limit.”
