Metal thieves strike at railway depot

COPPER thieves caused thousands of pounds worth of damage by stealing worthless metal from a freight train,

Burglars stole 62 copper straps from the train stationed at Belmont Yard near White Rose Way.

Pc Gareth Swiffen of British Transport Police said due to their size the straps were “practically worthless”.

He said: “The straps are required to protect the train should it be subject of an electrical power surge. This theft has not only caused significant financial loss to the rail company concerned, but also risked the health of employees going about their daily work.
