A masked burglar has been jailed for ten-and-a-half years for a vicious armed raid that left a couple seriously injured.
Mark Milner, 29, of Wildene Drive, Mexborough, and two others broke into a home in Chaucer Road, Mexborough, wearing balaclavas and wielding hammers and poles.
Sheffield Crown Court heard the trio assaulted the residents, a 55-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, striking the woman in the head and beating the man.
As a result of her injuries, the woman has now lost sight in one eye.
Forensic evidence left at the scene tied Milner to the crime. He was arrested the following day and charged in June 2014.
Milner was jailed on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary.
A 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, both from Doncaster, were arrested in connection with the incident and were released due to insufficient evidence.
After the case, investigating officer Pc Emma Taylorson, of Doncaster Police, said: “I am delighted with the sentence handed to Milner at court, which reflects the gravity of this offence.
“The victims were subjected to a vicious attack in a horrific case of mistaken identity and I hope that they are reassured knowing Milner will be behind bars for many years to come.
“This case demonstrates that we do not tolerate violent crime or burglary in South Yorkshire and if you engage in this activity, you will be prosecuted and brought to justice.”
